research project at dinâmia'cet-Iscte

The research focuses on the analysis of the existing proportion in the morphometric composition of the interior space in Palaces in Lisbon. The temporal space is between the Restoration of 1640 and the Earthquake of 1755. The main objective is to create knowledge about the essential geometric principles of regularity, order and proportion in noble buildings. A simple question that can sum up research in development is to know - What is the function of proportion in the function of architecture? This scientific project interests the knowledge of the Portuguese architectural culture, and consequently the intervention in its conservation and Safeguarding the architectural heritage. Within a horizon of interior adaptation and transformation, this study creates the basis for the knowledge of original design and spatiality, allowing an intervention in balance with the primitive spatial essence, that is, an intervention in proportion to the rules of composition, geometry and architectural rhythm.

Link to DINÂMIA'CET-IUL identifying mission:

This research deals with the method and praxis in the Portuguese Constructive Tradition, in the spatial design and construction of noble residences in Lisbon. Currently, the city of Lisbon presents an incomplete survey that identifies more than 500 noble residences in its urban network. An architectural heritage that is multiplied by the national territory. Its safeguard, consolidation and architectural intervention is interdependent of the knowledge one has about it. Consequently, the investigation of the Portuguese Architectural Culture, where this study is inserted, intends to study to know, to know to conserve, to preserve to bequeath. The safeguarding of this architectural heritage depends on the dissemination and sharing of knowledge, particularly with the active civil society, scientific community and owners, objectives common to the DC Cities and Territories research group.
