research project at dinâmia'cet-Iscte

I finished the PhD in Economics in 2018, which addressed the theme of environmental valuation of the impacts associated with the process of coastal erosion, one of the most important problems of the coastal zones that might significantly affect the well-being of the population. It is intended to continue the development of this line research. The relevance and vulnerability of coastal zones is revealed in the concerns of public policy plans and strategies. Portugal has been no exception in this area. The management of coastal erosion involves several contradictory points of view in the technical and scientific fields, but also within the general population. The purpose of this research is to contribute with a methodology and results to inform the formulation of more efficient public policies in the domain of sustainable management of the coastal erosion, protecting the interests of the population. The research intends to contribute to environmental valuation of impacts and ways of managing coastal erosion to support a sustainable management of the coastal zone. This implies the analysis of coastal users' preferences; modelling the impact of coastal erosion and of its management on the well-being of the population; the analysis of the risk perception of coastal erosion and the investigation of its determinants.

The research program is part of the research group Governance, Economy and Citizenry of DC. Since DC is a research unit combining research on economic, social and cultural topics, focused on a sustainable development objective, I consider that this research program becomes consistent with the mission of the Centre. This research promotes environmental sustainability by contributing with useful information to support the public decision-making process of sustainable coastal erosion management. The users’ preferences are fundamental for sustainable management of coastal zone, given the need of intervention and preservation priorities. The social perception of risk is also fundamental insofar as the understanding of the erosion effects facilitates the cooperation and acceptance of the measures resulting from the decision-making process, as well as the adoption of favourable behaviours to the coastal zones management.
