research project

Portugal has invested in the tourism sector where, since 2006, it has been implementing strategic plans. Due to the economic contribution of the sector to the country, it is relevant to consider the structure of security, expressive for the occurrence of the activity, in which, the incidence of crimes against tourists, especially international tourists and the presence of incivilities related to social conditions, bring a sense of insecurity and risk to this demand by pushing it away. This research proposes to analyze the public security policies that Portugal is adopting to continue to position itself as a safe tourist destination in the European and international context. With these results, it is hoped to contribute with elements that help to draw up and / or strengthen safety strategies for the sector in order to bring effectiveness to the proposal and implementation of security actions for tourism demand, especially for international tourist demand, contributing to the sustainability of the sector with positive effects for the Portuguese economy.

Visible is the relevance of tourism to the Portuguese economy. The conservation and preservation of its historical and cultural heritage is intermediated with the need to organize its territory so that the tourist activity can be carried out with greater satisfaction by tourists and visitors. This organization of the territory is also relevant due to the necessity and incontestable experience and sharing of territory between citizens and tourists / visitors. For this coexistence to have positive effects on those who visit the country, the organization of the territory is a necessary ingredient for the cities and their citizens to have peaceful coexistence, a matter where the security and the public policies aimed at this make tourism in the country determining item for the choice as tourist destination.
