The question of the composition and recompositions of the social fabric of cities and their spatial expression or, in another perspective, the analysis of the change of the social and urban structure along the processes of urban growth, is a line of research inscribed in the founding matrix of urban studies and has since become a fundamental theme of scientific production. In Portugal, the systematic and long-term analysis of social recompositions has taken, as an empirical object, the social structure of Portuguese society as a whole, rather than the specific cases of its metropolitan territories.The present project takes as object of study the relation between the transformations of the social structure and the urban structure in the two metropolitan areas, in the long period that goes from 1950 to 2011.
