Sacred buildings have long played a central role in shaping the urban and social fabric of cities. However, in an increasingly secular and multi-religious society, their function and significance have evolved.
This session coordinated by Rolando Volzone (DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte | ISCTE-IUL) and Francesco Novelli (DAD | Politecnico di Torino) in the frame of the 12th AISU Congress aims to critically analyse the transformation of religious spaces, focusing on:
Historical and political processes that influenced their transformation;
Their impact on urban landscapes and social dynamics;
The intersection of past and present, including contemporary challenges.
We invite contributions from historians, urban planners, architects, sociologists, and theologians to foster an interdisciplinary discussion.
