Science communication in Portugal: institutional, scientific and political images of public understanding of science

Marta Cristina das Fontes Entradas

Descrição

We live in a society that depends on Science and Technology (S&T), where scientists are needed as well as a public that supports science. The last Eurobarometer on S&T (2010) shows a gap between science and society in Portugal: the public believe that they are badly informed on S&T and describe themselves as lacking interest in these topics; while, at the same time, science remains a very positive value in Portuguese culture, and the people expect a lot from scientific progress. Compounding the problem, scientists fear they are "wasting their time" communicating science, despite being the group most trusted by the public to do so, and PUS policies do not respond to recent developments in the way the relationship between science and society is negotiated.
